DWG / AutoCAD drawings of an existing building

The building as it is, ready to edit in AutoCAD.

DWG drawings of an existing building cost the Matterport scan (from $395 under 1,500 sq. ft.) plus the drawings ordered at cost, with no markup, by floor area and the layers you choose. Scanning takes half a day for about 10,000 sq. ft.; the drawings are then produced from the model. In Montreal and across Quebec, since 2015. Call 514 262-9248.

  • DWG, DXF and PDF, by layer
  • Architecture, furniture, electrical, reflected ceiling
  • From 3 business days, according to Matterport
  • 2D schematic floor plan included with the tour

They trust us

An AutoCAD drawing taken from the scan, not redrawn from memory.

The original drawings are missing, outdated or wrong. Rather than re-measuring room by room, we capture the building in a single site visit; the DWG drawing is drawn from that laser-measured model, and your team opens it in AutoCAD to draw what comes next.

A real tour to explore

When do you need a DWG drawing of an existing building?

How it works

From the first call to going live.

  1. 1

    A 30-minute call

Floor area, number of floors, layers wanted (architecture only, or with furniture, electrical, reflected ceiling). Written quote.

  2. 2

    The Pro3 scan

Room by room, without interrupting your operations; in the evening or on Saturday mornings if needed. 100% Pro3 capture, a requirement for CAD files.

  3. 3

    The tour goes online

The model is assembled, checked and put online 24 to 48 hours after the scan in most cases. Your team can already measure in it.

  4. 4

    The DWG drawings

Ordered from the model, drawn from 3 business days according to Matterport, then sent by email, billed at cost.

Public pricing

The scan, then the drawings at cost.

The price of the scan depends on the floor area. It includes the 3D tour, the 2D schematic floor plan and one year of hosting. DWG drawings are ordered at cost, based on floor area and the layers chosen, and billed with no markup.

A DWG drawing derived from the scan is neither sealed nor certified

The drawings are drawn from a model accurate to ±20 mm at 10 m, according to Matterport: it is a base plan of existing conditions, not a drawing sealed by an architect or an engineer, nor a certificate of location. For a permit, a commercial lease or fabrication tolerances, a licensed professional validates and completes the drawings, or a land surveyor does the survey. A capture with a 360 camera or a phone yields no CAD file: we scan with the Pro3.

DWG drawing from a 3D scan: how it works

A DWG drawing from a 3D scan starts on site, with the Matterport Pro3 camera. Moved from position to position, it photographs the building and laser-measures it (LiDAR); Matterport’s software assembles these positions into a registered 3D model, accurate to ±20 mm at 10 m according to Matterport, online 24 to 48 hours after the scan in most cases.

The CAD drawings are then ordered from this model: drawn by layer, according to the ISO 13567 standard, and delivered in DWG, DXF and PDF, from 3 business days according to Matterport. You open them in AutoCAD or in any software that reads DWG, then draw what comes next. For a simple layout plan, the schematic floor plan included with the tour is often enough; the DWG becomes necessary when you need to edit, dimension or overlay.

Architecture, furniture, electrical, reflected ceiling: the layers offered

The CAD survey is ordered to suit your needs:

  • Architecture: walls, doors, windows, stairs and openings, to scale.
  • Furniture: the furniture and equipment in place, useful for a new layout.
  • Electrical: the existing electrical plan, with the fixtures and devices visible during the scan.
  • Reflected ceiling: the reflected ceiling plan, which locates suspended ceilings, light fixtures, diffusers and detectors.

Each layer is added at Matterport’s cost, based on floor area, with no markup; the exact amount appears in your quote. The camera cannot see through walls: what is hidden behind the drywall appears neither in the model nor in the drawing.

AutoCAD drawing of an existing building: who is it for?

Architects and technologists. An AutoCAD drawing of an existing building is the starting point of a renovation or an addition. According to a case study published by Matterport, the firm KUOP Design, a Matterport customer, cut its AutoCAD modelling time in half by starting from the scan rather than from a manual survey.

Designers and property managers. The up-to-date base plan receives partitions, workstations and furniture; the 3D tour then serves to check clearances. See space planning.

Contractors, municipalities and institutions. The DWG and the tour attached to the call for tenders: every bidder works from the same record of existing conditions, with fewer preparatory visits. See the architecture and construction sector.

A base plan, not a sealed drawing

The DWG derived from the scan reproduces what the camera measured: it serves to design, to estimate and to present. For a permit, your professional validates and completes it; for a certificate of location or fabrication tolerances, you need a land surveyor or a terrestrial laser scanner. One more condition: CAD files require a capture done entirely with the Pro3.

The same model also yields, as needed, an E57 point cloud for ReCap, Revit or Civil 3D, and a Revit LOD 200 model for BIM work. Everything starts with the 3D building scan; you choose the deliverables afterwards, without going back to the site.

DWG drawings in Montreal and across Quebec

Based in Boucherville, on the South Shore, we scan in Montreal and across Quebec; beyond about 100 km from Montreal, a travel fee of $0.73/km applies, shared between the sites of a single trip. Among others, we have scanned the Quebec Ministry of Transport’s fleet management centre in Laval, the City of Candiac’s Atelier 25 and rest areas for the Quebec Ministry of Transport.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, our answers.

Another question? Write to marc@panosphere360.com or call 514 262-9248.

Which layers does a DWG drawing from a 3D scan contain?

Depending on the options ordered: architecture (walls, doors, windows, stairs), furniture, electrical and reflected ceiling plan. The drawings are drawn by layer, according to the ISO 13567 standard, per Matterport.

What is the turnaround time for an AutoCAD drawing of an existing building?

The 3D tour is online 24 to 48 hours after the scan in most cases. Large buildings and big projects can take several days. The CAD drawings are then produced from 3 business days, according to Matterport, and sent by email.

How much does a DWG drawing from a 3D scan cost?

The scan follows the grid: $395 for under 1,500 sq. ft., plus $100 per additional 1,000 sq. ft., with the 3D tour, 2D floor plan and one year of hosting included. DWG drawings are ordered at cost, based on floor area and the layers chosen, and billed with no markup.

How accurate is a CAD drawing derived from a Matterport scan?

The source model is accurate to ±20 mm at 10 m, according to Matterport. That is enough to design a renovation, a layout or a bid, but not for fabrication tolerances or a land survey.

Can the DWG drawing be used for a permit?

As a base plan, yes; as a filed drawing, not without validation. The DWG is neither sealed nor certified: your architect, technologist or engineer checks and completes it before using it in a permit application.

Can you get an electrical plan of the existing building?

Yes, the electrical option of the CAD drawing locates the fixtures and devices visible during the scan. The camera cannot see inside walls: hidden wiring does not appear, unless it was captured before the drywall went up.

What is the difference between the included 2D plan and the DWG drawing?

The included schematic plan is an image (PNG, PDF) per floor, with approximate areas: perfect for presenting or planning a layout. The DWG is a vector file by layer, editable in AutoCAD, to draw the rest of the project.

Does a CAD file require a particular kind of capture?

Yes: a capture done entirely with the Pro3 camera. According to Matterport, any position captured with a phone or a 360 camera in the model prevents the production of CAD, E57 and BIM files. That is why we capture our surveys with the Pro3.
